New libraries for new needs:
architecture and the challenges
of technology - 1990-2000
[Nuove biblioteche per nuovi
bisogni: l'architettura
di fronte alle sfide
della tecnologia (1990-2000)]
In collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs
Coordinator: Paolo Bellini
The arrival of new technology and electronic format deeply changed
the context where libraries work. The presence of computer, the data
base and the electronic publications, Internet and its services meant a
clear-cut division between a "before" and an "after". A so deep change
asks for new architectural solutions for flexible libraries which should
be able to adapt themselves to a technology in a very fast progress and
with unforeseeable consequences. These consequences are charming for the
users to whom we devote more and more our best attention. This
conference aims to be an occasion for an exam for the libraries built in
Europe from 1990 to 2000 in order to understand how each of them solved
the problem of the relationship with new technologies in the context of
architectural projecting works. Some experts will talk about the
internal solutions and the furnishings for the libraries, too.
Speakers: Antonella Agnoli (Italia), Marcello Benedettelli (Italia),
Marie-Françoise Bisbrouck (Francia), Francesco Bitonte (Italia),
Graham Bulpitt (Regno Unito), Craig Dykers (Norvegia), Tanja Notten
(Olanda), Jacques Riva (Francia), and others.

The making and management of the collection
[Formazione e gestione delle raccolte]
Coordinator: Giovanni Solimine
Italian libraries show an increasing interest for the programming of
the development of the documentary collections. This session aims to
present some significant experiences that have been recently made in
different contexts: the projecting of the documentary aspect; the
insertion of private collections in the libraries; the definition of the
guide-lines for a coordinate development of the collections owned by
libraries that are part of cooperative systems; the criteria of analysis
and selection of the documents; the creation of consortia for the access
to electronic resources; the material organization of the documents.
Speakers: Alessandro Agustoni, Giovanni Di Domenico, Paola Gargiulo,
Patrizia Lucchini, Rossana Morriello, Loredana Vaccani, Maurizio
Vivarelli and others.

In the library there's something new, indeed, something ancient.
The historical collections: the access age
[C'è qualcosa di nuovo in biblioteca, anzi di antico.
Le collezioni storiche. L'era dell'accesso]
Coordinator: Lorenzo Baldacchini
This session wants to discuss about what is new in the context of the
work of the librarian employed in historical collections after the
technological revolution of the millenium end.
For a long time the approach to historical collections was mainly
concetrated on the preservation and cataloging. The reflection on these
two aspects produced many results in the last years both in a national
and international field. About this subject the approach to the
historical funds as object of a service, as it happens for other
collections of the library, was less common. The access theme summarizes
all aspects of the service that, through the new solutions of
technology, puts the ancient funds in a different perspective with new
and still unexplored opportunities.
Speakers: Robin Alston, Ilaria Andreoli, Lorenzo Baldacchini, Luisa
Buson, Luigi Crocetti, Claudia Leoncini, Anna Manfron, Massimo Menna.
